Roger Norman worked down the list of obstacles that the Norman Motorsports team overcame, “Five miles out of our main pit at RM210 we hit a rock that broke the bead lock off the wheel which lost air pressure so we had to change a tire, but that was the only BFGoodrich tire that we changed all race, they really held up to this rough course.  Then the right front shock shaft broke at the base, which in turn broke the brake line so we had no brakes, but luckily it didn’t damage anything else.  Chase came out to put a fresh shock on and saw we had two studs broke on the rear wheel hub, they fixed both and we took off.  Next, the front shocks lost all nitrogen, I have no idea how, but we were running on springs.  We were down to 20mph at some of the rougher spots.  We made it to the next pit where they discovered that the heat exchanger had a giant crack in it and the radiator was almost completely empty, with a simple fix they replaced it with a hose.  We have a tranny cooler up in back by the radiator that doesn’t get airflow unless we have enough wind, and with the new Vision X roof lights it was getting blocked. So since we didn’t want to take the lights off in the middle of the desert, and we weren’t in the contention for the win, we babied it and had to stop a whole bunch of times when it reached 290 degrees to let it cool.  At the last pit they took off the lights and once we left that pit we were able to run full race speed to the finish.” Roger Norman with co-drivers Dick Grey and JT Taylor finished 17^th with a time of 20 hours 8 minutes.

The Baja 1000 experience started with Roger Norman, Dick Grey and JT Taylor pre-running for 12 days.  “We were running around staying in different towns, really enjoying Baja.  That’s 90% of the fun for me, the pre-running part allows me to meet different people, try different restaurants and get to know all the locals,” said Norman.  Pre-running is still work, “we were making really intricate notes and JT was learning a new computer system.  It was a lot to bite off, and I don’t know how to say it…it was a lot of work….” All in all, “we had a great time pre-running with no issues at all.  Besides a couple minor fixes, the Wide Open Pre-runner ran 3,000 miles of flawless prerunning,” said Roger Norman.

Wide Open Utah is the result of a long-term agreement with Wide Open Excursions, which offers off-road driving experiences in Baja California, Mexico, and the USA. The new joint venture will offer unique riding and driving experiences using custom-built Baja Challenge off-road race cars on Miller Motorsports Park’s one-mile Off Road Short Course and multi-configurational Off-Road Desert Course, with tracks ranging in length from 4.5 to seven miles.

Four distinct programs are being offered by Wide Open Utah, ranging from a ride-along with a professional driver to half- and full-day driving experiences and a one-day offsite excursion on the historic Pony Express trail.

The Off-Road Ride-Along Experience puts you in the right-hand seat of a Baja Challenge car with a professional driver to get the full “co-driver” experience for four exhilarating hot laps around the MMP Off-Road Short Course. Remaining 2011 dates for the Ride-Along Experience are September 3, September 10, October 8 and October 15.

The Intro to Baja Off-Road Experience puts you behind the wheel of a Baja Challenge car after a brief classroom session and vehicle orientation. Participants can choose between six laps on the MMP Off-Road Short Course or three laps on the MMP Off-Road Desert Course. Available dates for 2011 are September 3 and October 8.

The Full Day Off-Road Experience includes the classroom and vehicle orientation sessions, followed by eight laps around the MMP Off-Road Short Course. The Pony Express Lunch Run is the ultimate adventure for off-road enthusiasts. RENO, NV     AUGUST 17, 2011  –  Roger Norman and Jake Velasco qualified in the #8 Wide Open Excursions, Crystal Bay Casino Class 1400 Trick Truck for the longest race on US Soil, the Best in the Desert Vegas to Reno that starts at 9:30am Friday August 19^th.  On Wednesday, Norman qualified taking the 18^th starting position, and 10^th in the class of 28 Trick Trucks.  “We had a clean run today with no issues and qualified mid-pack,” said Roger Norman after racing in 107’ Las Vegas heat.  “This is a long and dusty race across the Nevada desert, and we wanted to start out front, but would rather start with a truck that we didn’t have to work on tonight.”

The man-made courses at Miller Motorsports Park didn’t look nearly “as bad” as what he had encountered during the Oroville event, but they proved to be much harder.  Getting caught in Cracks and not able to make off-camber vertical climbs continued to add the points.

Although the scores didn’t show an exceptional weekend, the goal is still in tact to learn more about rock crawling and the rig.

The next event will be at Donner Ski Ranch on August 5-6 where they will compete on Natural Terrain for the first time of the season, a very different experience!

The challenges started while still in the wash at RM1 when the brake pedal went to the firewall, they had to slow down in the roadway and see what the issue was.  “When Lance got out of the truck to check there was fluid everywhere on the right rear caliper,” recalls Roger Norman.  “He tightened the bolts that were still safety wired and just then a local came up to see what we needed.  We asked for brake fluid, and as Lance buckled back in the local poured some brake fluid into the reservoir. We were certainly not 100%, not even close to 100%.”

They continued on cautiously knowing that they had to pump the brakes to get any rear breaking and were planning to bleed the brakes at the first pit around race mile 150.  “At RM9.9 we came around the corner to a Trophy Truck that was upside down blocking the course completely.  The locals flagged us around them, and just as we were reentering the race course the left front tire hit a huge ditch hidden in the brush and weeds, breaking the tie rod and rack.  It was bad!” said Roger on Saturday night.  They tried to keep going but completely blew the next corner because the wheel was sitting at 90degree to normal and stuck.  They limped the truck off the race course to a safe place to stop, and waited for the pit crew to come with parts.  “It took the chase crew 40 minutes to get to us because they were headed south already, and about an hour to fix it,” said a defeated Norman. “By then, everyone had gone by us, even the UTV’s, and now we knew we would have locals on the track going both directions which would make it even more unsafe.  We decided as a team that we would call the race right then, and save the truck for the next race.”

Tim Nugent didn’t get his opportunity to co-drive for Roger Norman in the Baja 500 this year, “I’m disappointed, but just like the accident, it’s racing!” said Nugent.  “I really enjoyed the pre-running getting in the back country, exploring, plotting lines and talking back and forth, sharing ideas and strategy.  The camaraderie and friendship with Roger was the most enjoyable part.”

The next scheduled desert race for Roger Norman will be the Best in the Desert Vegas to Reno in August.  In the meantime, he will compete in two W.E. Rock Rock Crawling events.

Course:  Total Mileage: 454.69 miles (4 checkpoints, 36 virtual checkpoints).
Starts and finishes in downtown Ensenada on Boulevard Costero in front of the Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center, marking the fourth straight year this race has been able to finish on Blvd. Costero. Starting and finishing in Ensenada, this year’s tight and technical course will run in a clockwise direction for the seventh straight year. It includes a wide variety of terrain and the overall course is similar to last year, with the normal weather-caused changes. The course runs East to Ojos Negros area (race mile 34.90), South through Tres Hermanos (rm52.97) to near Lllano Colorado (rm72.54) then East and Northeast up over the top of the 5,000-foot Summit (rm116.43), looping east and NE to Cahabuzo Junction (rm144.14) South into the Laguna Salada desert (rm 158.53) running parallel to the Sea of Cortez to Borrego (rm206.83) and then back Northwest, Southwest past the Mike’s Sky Ranch turnoff, North to near Valle de la Trinidad (rm262.70), followed by a West travel section, turning north at the Pacific Ocean (rm318.20) then East, North and back West for the final charge back into Ensenada. The first 35.18 miles will be used both outgoing and incoming. The course also includes the traditional 30-plus mile run along the shores of the Pacific Ocean from race-mile 318.20 to 358.49. There are five highway pavement areas on the course, 14.22 miles total, with a maximum speed limit of 60 mph.

RENO, NV     JUNE 1, 2011  –  The Norman Motorsports team consisting of Roger Norman, Lance Clifford and Tim Nugent went to Baja last week to begin pre-running for the upcoming 2011 SCORE Baja 500 that will take place this Saturday.  “We have been pre-running everyday, morning until night,” said Roger Norman.  “Pre-running is very important, it is where we get to see everything and discover all the little things that we might have trouble with during the race.”

Lance Clifford has co-drove for Roger in the past including iron-manning the Baja 1000.  The third seat in pre-running this week is reserved for Tim Nugent, the motorcycle rider that was struck by Norman during the Baja 500, who has made a full recovery.  “Roger and Lance work really well together, and I see how the coordination is important.  I didn’t realize there was so much that goes into marking course because on a motorcycle we are just picking lines, not able to have two sets of eyes including one on the GPS,” commented Tim Nugent.  “It has been rewarding being in the middle seat, I can see both sides of what Roger and Lance are seeing.”  Nugent will co-drive for the last 140 or so miles of the race.

The Team has been up early every morning, pre-running from dawn to dusk, and sometimes even longer.  “We have been going to the gym every morning before going out in the truck.  The first day we did about 18 hours in the truck and we were all a little sore,” commented Norman.  They will finish pre-running on Thursday and then test the #8 Crystal Bay Trophy Truck for its 17^th position start.  “We will be focusing on pre-running the start of the race on Friday, with being 17^th off the line, we know we will be in a lot of dust and need to be careful not to have any problems.”

The team will be available during Contingency in Ensenada, Baja on Friday June 3^rd at the Telnor booth from 12:30pm to 2pm signing posters next to the #8 Crystal Bay Casino Trophy Truck display.
